Overview

The Ford Community & Performing Arts Center is a multi-faceted, multi-facility network of leisure, fitness, life enrichment, and cultural arts activities. The swimming pool is one of the main attractions of the facility, offering a safe and enjoyable environment for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. At the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, RecTrac software allows members to check themselves into the facility. Unfortunately, some guests sneak in and cause disturbances such as fights and reckless behavior in the pool. Additionally, it is difficult to identify guests in the pool area, which becomes a critical concern if there is a medical emergency. The facility is in the process of redesigning the check-in system for members and guests.

My involvements in this projects include conducting extensive market research to understand the existing design and future software that the center is going to use , conducting semi-structured interviews with target users to study what they really need.

My design pitched the final design proposal to the client, and received positive feedback on adopting our design recommendations.

The Ford Community Center is facing two main interconnected problems:
1) people sneak into the facilities
2) when someone gets injured, especially those who sneaked in, difficult to identify them in order to find emergency contact and crucial health related information. Subsequently, these two issues cause a myriad of other problems, such as fighting and making patrons uncomfortable.

We are tasked with finding a way to reduce the number of people who successfully sneak into the facilities and more efficiently identify facility users, with primary focus on the latter.
Facilities staff (who) at the Ford Community Center (where) cannot reliably prevent people from sneaking in, nor identify facility users (what), which prevents them from allowing only permitted users use the facilities and ensuring their safety (why).

Design Task / Objectives

Design Focus

Existing recreation management software often lacks the specific features we are designing for, specifically identify unconscious patrons. Our goal is to create a feature solution that addresses this gap and provides functionalities tailored to ensuring the safety of unconscious individuals.

Find a way to:
1. Reduce the number of people successfully sneaking in
2. More efficiently identify facility users

Pain points

  • Staff have no time to check whether they are membership when in rush hour

  • Hard to match them since the picture is outdated or there is no picture at all
Staff are conditioned to push the pedal

  • the sportsman is difficult to use, a lot of buttons and steps

Tasks

  • open door for patron
    process daily pass

  • call 911

  • membership processing
    information inquiry

Goals

  • easily stop people sneak in

  • easily identify people who use fake code

Insights

  • How many staff depends on time
    do they have different role

  • how many computers

Market Research

A research on different product similar to existing system in three perspectives.

Brainstorming

Feedback

we gather feedback from both stakeholders:

Base on stakeholders’ opinion, we designed to use camera solutions, including manual search and facial recognition.

Wristband as a backup plan for future.

Front desk Feedback

We are also thinking of including a barcode tag in the future in case visitors forget their phones or for other inconvenience reasons.

Patron Feedback

I define the relationship between the 3 stakeholders:

  • Patron

  • front desk

  • Lifeguard

First iteration

with work flow

Among all these features,
What’s our MVP?
Minimum Viable Product

our design features for this software should be developed with the least amount of effort possible to our client .

The developers potentially avoid lengthy and unnecessary work.

Key Frames of the existing software

Features need to improve:

  • dashboard with check-in section

  • admittance with live camera

  • profile information with health conditions

New Features need to design:

  • facial recognition system

  • users check-in portal

  • membership identification for life guard

Remain:

  • No UI Change

Iteration &Testing

1- First try

2- Second try

3- Triple try

Re-define the layout base on main goal with existing software design.

Final Design Walk Through

Future
Considerations

For the future, I would love to explore the physical product more, since that wasn’t a huge priority for the MVP. I think that adding barcode-tag or wristband would be useful since it would allow users to have more options to check-in.

Overall, I had a really great time with this project. I’m extremely proud of the outcome and had a lot of fun taking the lead and designing something end-to-end myself.

In addition, this is my first experience design project that I had opportunities to communicate with our client and to learn their product needs.

The concept of MVP taught me that we only need a product with just enough features to address the users' needs.
